Shimon the Beggar:
Shimon saw the light in the night sky. He was drawn to it as if his legs had minds of their own. The day had been hard .Even though there were hundreds on the road for the census, not many had additional coins to throw his way.
He let the light draw him to a stable. Within he saw a family gathered around a baby of pure light. At first Shimon dared not look, the light was that powerful.
He finally gathered courage and through a crossbeam bejeweled with an oldspider web, he saw the child of light.
Everything changed that night. When he saw the light from that child, he felt everything empty. All his sorrows, all the images from the terrible war he had suffered, all was gone. His heart slowed so that he could hear it continually. In his heartbeat he could hear and was connected to all beings and their sorrows and joys.
Shimon became a famous basket maker along the trade routes. His detail was exquisite, yet he always wove one mistake into his baskets. When asked why the mistake he would simply say, ” We all have light, we all have darkness, do you choose to stifle the lamp of your heart or let it shine this day my friend”?
He kept only enough money to buy a loaf of bread a day for himself, the remainder of the money he gave to the poor….
peace be with you,
little brother of dust
